I read everything published by Thomas King. He is a wonderful storyteller, and I am especially fond of the Thumps DreadfulWater books, of which this one is the first. Originally published under the pseudonym Hartley GoodWeather, its central character is a Native American police officer who has left law enforcement - or tries to - and goes off to a remote town to be a nature photographer. Unfortunately for him - but fortunately for us readers - people keep getting killed and the sheriff keeps deputizing Thumps, whether he wants to be involved or not. (He doesn't.) Thomas King has a delightful wry sense of humour, and his characters - especially Thumps - tend not to take themselves entirely seriously, even when they are involved in investigating a crime. The DreadfulWater series includes a cast of fully realized, sometimes delightful, sometimes annoying characters, and it is fun to follow the development of these people and their relationships with each other.
